What is an NVR?

An NVR is a Network Video Recorder that records video from IP (NVR) Security Cameras connected via Ethernet Cables. It serves as the central hub of modern Security Camera Systems, providing a centralized platform for monitoring, recording, and playback of video footage.

How Does an NVR Work?

An NVR works by receiving digital video streams from IP security cameras over a network. It processes and records these streams onto an internal Surveillance-Grade Hard Drives, allowing you to review footage locally on a connected monitor or remotely via a Lorex mobile app.

Leveraging AI for Smarter Security

NVRs are not just passive recording devices; they are intelligent systems capable of advanced video analytics. By leveraging powerful algorithms, NVRs can analyze video streams in real-time, detecting motion, recognizing objects, and triggering alerts for specific events. This enables more proactive security measures, such as sending notifications for unusual activity, giving you the most time to react and prevent events before they happen.

How to Choose the Right NVR

NVRs come in various configurations. The number of channels determines how many cameras can be connected to the NVR. Additionally, note the NVRs total hard drive capacity. The hard drive can typically be expanded to support higher capacity hard drives, which will ultimately extend the amount of footage it can save as it is programed to overwrite the oldest footage with the newest. Furthermore, NVRs sometimes have multiple hard drive bays, allowing for increased storage capacity and redundancy. Read more about how to Upgrade Your Security Storage.

Fusion or Elite Series?

Lorex offers two powerful NVR options for wired systems: Elite and Fusion. The Elite Series is ideal for professional installations, supporting real-time video, PTZ control, and advanced analytics like people counting and traffic analysis. Elite Series NVRs use the Lorex Pro app. Fusion Series NVRs, as part of The Fusion Collection, offer flexibility, allowing for both Wired IP Security Cameras and Wireless (Wi-Fi) Security Cameras (including Video Doorbell Cameras, Floodlight Security Cameras, and Battery-Operated Wireless Cameras), and are perfect for smart home monitoring and small business security. Fusion Series NVRs use the Lorex app.

Seamless Smart Home Integration

Lorex NVRs seamlessly integrate with popular smart home devices like Google Home and Amazon Alexa, allowing for voice control of various functions. By connecting your NVR to these platforms, you can use voice commands to view live feeds, review footage, turn camera warning lights or sirens on/off, and more. Additionally, you can cast live video feeds to smart displays or streaming devices, providing a convenient way to monitor your property from anywhere.
