Whether you're in the market for a new security camera system or browsing our website for the first time, the world of security cameras can be a bit daunting. To make things a little easier, we've created a quick guide on Lorex products and their features to help you out.
BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO LOREX
Recorders are the backbone of security systems. Not only do they provide safe and secure local recording, but recorders are also where important system settings can be found and customized.
We offer a variety of security cameras - wired (Digital IP or Analog), wireless, wire-free, and Wi-Fi - that are compatible with contemporary home and business needs.
Lorex security cameras come with a variety of state-of-the-art features, such as Color Night Vision, smart home compatibility, advanced motion detection, and two-way talk, just to name a few.
There are a few different types of recorders:
Network Video Recorder (NVR)
Network Video Recorders are used with Digital IP Security Cameras. They are easily connected to the cameras with a single CAT5e/CAT6 ethernet cable that provides both power and video. They are referred to as "Network" because IP cameras send their compressed data over your local network for storage.
Digital Video Recorder (DVR)
Digital Video Recorders work with analog (CVI / MPX) security cameras and are connected by a siamese BNC cable. Wireless MPX cameras, as well as wire-free cameras, also use DVRs (wire-free cameras require a specific DVR). They are called "Digital" because security cameras send uncompressed analog data to be digitally encoded/compressed and stored.
Important Recorder Features
Resolution: Lorex Recorders have a maximum resolution capability that range from 1080p to 4K.
Channels: The number of channels is the total amount of cameras that can be connected.
Recording Modes: Each camera that is connected to a recorder can be customized to record continuously, on motion, or scheduled.
Hard Drives: Our NVRs and DVRs include a built-in security-grade hard drive. In most cases, these hard drives can be upgraded for more storage.
Automatic Hard Drive Overwrite: Recorders are programmed to automatically delete the oldest footage to make enough room for the newest footage.
Remote Connectivity: It is through the recorder that you can connect your mobile devices for remote viewing, camera management, and motion notifications.
There are several different kinds of technologies that Lorex uses for our security cameras:
Digital IP cameras are the most technologically advanced. IP cameras capture video data (and audio if available) and then process and encode that data for quick network transmission back to the NVR. IP cameras also detect motion themselves and relay that information to the NVR to send push notifications or alerts. IP cameras do not need to be plugged into an electrical outlet as they receive power over the ethernet cable (power-over-ethernet), which gives them a fair amount of flexibility when it comes to installation.
Analog security cameras capture raw analog video (and audio if available) and send the data to a DVR for encoding and storage. Wired MPX cameras are connected to the DVR with a Siamese BNC cable. This cable combines two different cables in one: one for video, one for power. This allows you to connect the power for Analog cameras close by to the DVR, rather than near the camera itself. Wireless cameras, on the other hand, do not require cabling to the DVR but must be plugged into a power outlet close by to receive power.
Wire-free cameras are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which can typically last a few months without charging. The lack of cabling means they can be easily installed around your property. Wire-free cameras are designed to record only when motion is detected by a PIR (passive infrared) sensor that looks out for moving heat signatures. When movement is detected, the camera will automatically wake-up, start recording, and wirelessly transmit that data to the DVR or Hub for storage.
Wi-Fi cameras are standalone monitoring solutions that do not connect to any type of recorder. Instead, these cameras record to an on-board microSD card. Wi-Fi cameras connect directly to your wireless network and are controlled through a Lorex App. These cameras are designed to be easy to install and easy to use right out of the box. They can be easily moved around the house as needed and are perfect for a pet or baby monitoring. Some Wi-Fi models are even outdoor approved for simple front porch or entranceway monitoring.
Important Security Camera Information
Resolution: All Lorex cameras record HD resolution footage ranging from 1080p, 2K to 4K, depending on the model.
IP Ratings: The vast majority of Lorex security cameras can safely be installed outdoors. Outdoor cameras will have a minimum IP65 weatherproof rating, with select models rated at IP67 for the best outdoor performance.
Night Vision: All Lorex security cameras include infrared night vision. Some also have Color Night Vision capabilities.
Specialty Cameras: We carry a wide range of specialty cameras, such as PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom), audio, vandal-proof, smart detection, active deterrence, and more. They are sold individually or in pre-made bundles.
Security Camera Features
Several of these features may be important to you when researching a new system or camera:
Color Night Vision
Select camera models that come with Color Night Vision. With the help of ambient lighting, these cameras can record color footage throughout the night, providing better contrast and more detail.
Cameras with active deterrence technology help ward of intruders. They include a motion-activated LED light and a remote-triggered siren that you can activate through your smartphone.
Select models come with built-in microphones for listen-in audio monitoring. This can provide additional evidence (such as voices). Moreover, some camera models also include a speaker for two-way audio communication through the camera.
Many Lorex systems and standalone cameras are compatible with smart home devices, such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Use simple voice commands to get fast access to your cameras, view live or recorded footage, and activate camera features.
Stay connected to your home or business through our mobile apps. Use the app to view live or recorded video, configure camera settings, setup motion activated push notifications, and more, all from the palm of your hand.
No Monthly Fees
Regardless of whether you are looking to purchase a complete system or a standalone camera, there are never any hidden monthly fees involved. Every system or camera includes local storage, rather than cloud storage.
