Laser Fiber Optics Diameter Measurement System
This system which has been designed and built specifically for fiber optic manufacturing control measures in real time the diameter of the optical fiber as it is drawn with very high precision, e.g. less than 0.02 micrometer S.D. The system determines the average spatial frequency of the far-field interference pattern produced by illuminating the fiber with a laser beam. The average spatial frequency is determined by performing first a fast Fourier transform (FFT) on the interference data to obtain a coarse estimate for the average and then by performing a set of discrete sequence Fourier transforms (DSFTs) in the region of the coarse estimate to obtain the desired high precision estimate of the average. The system is capable of making real time measurements for a moving optical fiber, at rates of 500 measurements/second and more.
Voice Coil Actuator with State Space Control
This system was used in the fiber optic manufacturing process to controls a voice coil actuator on air bearing. The state space control feedback loop minimizes tension variation on optical fiber when it was winded on shipping spools in high speed.
Microscope Image Injection
This system is designed for medical applications. The system can overlay 3D computer generated images on surgical microscopes, so the surgeons can use the information generated from the CT, MRI scans during the operation.
